Floor Levelling, Bolton

Before we lay a new floor, we always ensure the subfloor is suitable by carrying out the relevant prep work.

Today we carried out the initial prep to a suspended floor before the installation of Herringbone LVT.

We initially installed 5mm plywood over the floor boards before applying a 3mm coat of self levelling compound to ensure a perfectly smooth subfloor.

Here’s a closer look at why a level subfloor is crucial for a flawless LVT installation, along with the steps we took to ensure a perfect foundation for our recent Herringbone LVT project:

Why a Level Subfloor Matters for LVT:

  • Smooth and Stable Surface: LVT planks are relatively thin and flexible. Even minor imperfections in the subfloor can telegraph through, creating an uneven and visually unappealing finished floor. A level subfloor provides a smooth and stable canvas for the LVT planks to adhere to, preventing any unevenness or rocking underfoot.
  • Locking System Integrity: Many LVT planks utilize a click-lock installation system. Uneven subfloors can compromise the tight fit of these interlocking joints, potentially leading to gaps, separation, and even moisture infiltration over time. A level subfloor ensures a secure and seamless connection between planks for a beautiful and long-lasting installation.
  • Reduced Noise: Uneven subfloors can cause LVT planks to flex and creak underfoot. A level subfloor minimizes these pressure points, creating a quieter and more comfortable walking experience.

Our LVT Subfloor Preparation Process:

  1. Subfloor Inspection: We began by thoroughly inspecting the existing subfloor. This involved checking for any loose boards, creaks, or signs of moisture damage. Any necessary repairs or replacements were completed to ensure a solid foundation.
  2. Plywood Underlayment: To create a smooth and stable base for the LVT, we installed a layer of 5mm plywood over the existing floorboards. This plywood layer helps distribute weight evenly and bridge any minor gaps between floorboards.
  3. Self-Leveling Compound: The final step involved applying a minimum 3mm coat of self-leveling compound across the entire floor surface. This specialized compound flows smoothly to fill any remaining imperfections and create a perfectly level subfloor for optimal LVT installation.

By taking these steps, we guarantee a smooth, level, and stable subfloor for your new Herringbone LVT. This ensures a beautiful, functional, and long-lasting floor that you can enjoy for years to come.
